My next destination was Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Its cobblestoned old town tells a story of a rich, complex past, shaped by Persian and Russian dominion. The city's architecture is a blend of Eastern Orthodox churches, ornate art nouveau buildings, and Soviet Modernist structures. Dominating the skyline are Narikala, a reconstructed fortress dating back to the 4th century, and Kartlis Deda, the iconic statue of the 'Mother of Georgia.' I also took a day trip to Kazbeg, exploring Zhinvali Water Reservoir, Gergeti Trinity Church, and the Gudauri Friendship Monument. (90 photos) |
